I usually back up my work into my Western Digital Passport 80 GB the manual way i.e Copy & Paste and if it asks for over write I say ‘Yes’ . But this I found to be cumbersome and trying some free back-up softwares didn’t cut the ice with me.

But when I read about Microsoft’s Sync Toy V2.0 , I was curious enough to download and try it. First of all its free and relatively a small download package at 8 MB. The installation was easy & straight forward but additional services like Microsoft Sync Framework runtime & services.

After running the software, it first asks to create a Folder pair with one on the left (usually my HD folder) & other on the right (my portable drive folder) and then it gives 3 options

Synchronize - Renames & deletes both sides

Echo - Renames & deletes only on right side

Contribute - Renames and updates on right side no delete.

After that, the task can be previewed or run. It was able to run in the background without majorly affecting any other tasks and the time it took to run was quite OK. All in all a good software to backup and synchronize your work, files, photos, music etc.

In this last part …..here are some of the other aspects of this phone

Connectivity *****

Dubbed “Web on the Go” phone its connectivity department is well rounded with GPRS,EDGE,3G,UMTS,HSDPA (the latter 3 has no way to be tested here in India), but the Netfront browser with landscape browsing was good to use. Local connectivity is looked after by USB 2.0 and bluetooth 2.0 (with A2DP). The E-Mail client was also easy to work with. A youtube player would have been nice and a bigger screen would have made the browsing experience little richer but at Rs. 9,000/- (185$) you have to make some sacrifices.

Extras *****

The inbuilt games like my personal favorite Quadrapop were nice to play and with its excellent java support many java games and apps can be installed. Other applications include Google Maps, Play Now,Track ID (to identify song info through internet), and the usual suspects like PictureDJ,MovieDJ,VideoDJ, Remote Control (a app to use your phone as a remote control to control your pc via bluetooth)

Summing up

Pros

+ Crisp screen quality

+ Good battery life

+ Value for Money

Cons

- Sluggish UI at times

Continuing with my thoughts on K660i …..

User Interface ****

The main feature which attracted me about this phone was the A200 platform coupled with 240 x 320 262K resolution screen with flash lite 2.0 support. The phone was slightly slower when compared to my K550 and accessing address book & call logs was slower than normal making it a tad irritating. But features like “Smart search” ( as you type the number the closest matching from the address book are displayed), media player was good. The keypad system is somewhat changed from the A100 platform which confused me a little at the start. The 3 x 4 grid is almost same except the “Alarm” is at the grid now with the ‘File manager’ inside the ‘Organizer’ menu which I didn’t like.

Messaging *****

The messaging app is almost as same as that of K550i , but due to the A200 platform there is no “More” option but there is a “Pop-out” menu key below the top left key. The keys are quite comfy to type with and the T9 dictionary is very handy and there is no lag while typing (which I can’t say for the whole working of the phone). SMS, MMS, Email are all supported. Now messages can be sorted and stored under different category. A “thread” like message system would have been a welcome addition

Multimedia ****

I knew this is a non-Auto focus 2 megapixel camera with no flash but in nice bright conditions the snap was quite crisp and color reproduction was nice other than else the camera is quite a mediocre one. The PSP style media player function was excellent able to handle pictures, music (mp3,aac,wma,ra) & videos (3gp,mp4). It can be used in horizontal / portrait mode. A FM radio with RDS is also present. Memory expansion is via Memory stick micro (M2) cards

More to follow……

So after almost 18 months with my K550i, I’ve changed my mobile device to a Sony Ericsson K660i (for which I’ve already written a short post). So here is the start of a 3 part post on my thoughts on K660i.

First of all -> The contents in the box,

K660 Handset (Wine on black)

BST-33 Battery

Stereo Headset HPM-62

Standard charger CST-60

Sandisk 1GB M2

DCU-60 USB Cable

PC Suite CD

Manual

Exteriors ****

Built with a glossy plastic and measuring 104.0 x 47.0 x 15.0 mm, its quite nice to hold but somewhat big when compared to a ordinary mobile phone. Weighing 95 grams, its quite ok to carry. The stainless steel trim coupled with the glossy plastic makes the handset smudge prone. The wine on black looks sleek but I would have preferred silver on black or cyan on black. The body construction was quite solid but still the battery case squeaked when pressed at a angle.

Phone *****

The signal receptions was excellent with good voice quality on both sides. The battery was able to hold for 3 days (with 1 hour of calls, 5-10 sms / per day & switching off in the night). The ringer volume was also nice & loud but havent yet checked out the handsfree speaker and vibration strength. All in all a good phone to talk with a nice address book with 1000 contacts ( Multiple mobile no’s, work, home no’s, email, address, birthday etc)

More to follow…..
I am astounded by my “CockTail Poll” showing overwhelming wish for a “mobilephone” this festive season of Diwali !! So Gals who are looking for a stylish phone and Guys who are thinking of gifting their mother, sister ….(Oops) & Girl friends …..without breaking their bank account can look at the Candybar styled Nokia 7310 SuperNova.

To start off the 7310 is the cheapset of the SuperNova series so far and to put it mildly is a Nokia 6300 in disguise. To briefly put it,

The phone came with a Blue Cover but to change the look there is a “Pink Express-on” cover.

It also has a TV out cable which the 6300 didn’t have in the box, but there was no USB cable or Micro SD Card inside (might be to save the cost)

Measuring 106.5 x 45.4 x 12 mm and weighing 85grams it was easy to hold and operate. The keypad with its glossy stainless steel finish was quite easy to type but keeping it clean will be quite a task.

The 2″ 240 x 320 , 16 million color TFT screen was pleasant to look at

The phone runs on Nokia’s Series40 5th Edition, so the interface is easy to operate with.

The 2 megapixel is ok and there is a video recording option too

Music quality is quite good and there is a FM radio too. But the headphone is 2.5mm jack so you can’t plug in your high quality headphones directly.

Connectivity is also well looked after with GPRS,EDGE,USB,Bluetooth with A2DP

At 7,700/- bucks (155$) is a no non-sense phone with quite good value for money. Those who think they can stretch their budgets little bit farther can conside the 7610 supernova _ a slider phone.

Even though Sony Ericsson P1i is quite a old phone, last week i was able to play it with for some time and came out quite impressed by its looks and features.

PROS

The fit & finish was excellent, typical ’sony’ one might call it. Measuring 106 x 55 x 17 mm and weighing at 124 grams its quite handy for a full fledged qwerty smartphone.

The ARM9 208 Mhz processor with 128 MB RAM seems to handle multitasking very well and the symbian UIQ OS V9.1 was quite easy to use

The 2.6″ 240 x 320 262K TFT screen was nice and sharp

The camera was also a worthy addition and its 3 megapixel autofocus shooter proved a useful snapper

Even though its a smartphone it had a worthy multimedia player capable of handling mp3, aac,wma,mp4, 3gp and also a FM Radio with RDS

Business features like support for Blackberry and Microsoft Exchange Server, a full fledged Opera browser and Office Suite makes it a handy companion for people on the go

Input methods include a nice handwriting recognition and a excellent word completion dictionary

Connectivity options like USB, Infrared,Bluetooth with A2DP, GPRS,3G, Wireless LAN make it a excellent smartphone to use

More features like Business card scanner, music recognition, pdf reader and fun stuff like games (with good graphics) makes it a nice all rounder.

The phone comes with 160 MB memory and can be expanded with Memory Stick Micro M2

Phone quality and battery was also very good even with extended usage.

CONS

The dual function keyboard was little tough to use

No EDGE connectivity

At a current street price of 16,000 bucks (335$) its a worthy buy for people who wants a good smartphone with good multimedia capabilities.

Sorry for the recent inactivity in my CockTail !! Went on a Nature trip and back now refreshed ……

I would like to share my experience with BSNL Data card as the opening salvo for this month. When some of my friends my small town had a BSNL data card and that too supposed to be with broadband speeds & EVDO connectivity, I laughed it off saying it would be same as the Tata Indicom CDMA 1X data card .

So when i finally had my hands on a ZTE branded data card (with No SIM card inside) and downloaded the drivers . After a few minutes I was setup & ready to go. The signal strength at my home was varying between 1-3 ticks and amazingly it showed as EVDO connection and got downlink speeds of almost 627 Kbps (as you can see from my screenshot).

In my office the signal strength was far worse so too the speed but for a wireless data connection it was the best I’ve seen so far. Sometimes the signal goes off and that prompts the data card to be taken out and restart the connection once again. The main problem I think, is the lack of BSNL’s CDMA towers and if they can increase the coverage it will be a great boon for wireless broadband users.

At a cost price of Rs. 4062/- (83$) and a monthly rent of Rs. 550/- (11$) its the cheapest wireless net connection available in India.

Those who want to share their experiences of BSNL data card can write their comments so potential buyers can know your opinion in your city.
