In keeping up with my previous post , I’ve left out two phones in the category which is very close to the earlier three. One is the hip and trendy W580i and other is the 3G variant of K550i/W610i called W660i . I haven’t come across it in real life but its major difference from W610i is its a 3G phone with a front facing camera and a more conventional keypad and is a real looker as you can see from the photo. But it has no EDGE connectivity and when compared to W580i its display is somewhat inferior at 176 x 220 whereas the walkman slider has a QVGA (240 x 320) resolution display.

For people looking for a clamshell walkman there is the new W380i out in town at almost 8,000/- rs (200 $) else if you want there is always the almost 100$ walkman phone W200i . So hopefully here is a comprehensive list of walkman phones under the 250$ dollar radar for you to choose from.

W580iMany of you might be keenly watching 3 GSM congress and what mouth watering mobiles you can buy next for you or your valentine ;-) . Meanwhile here is a sleek and trendy slider from Sony Ericsson which you might consider. Officially named as W580i (code name : Laura) its the walkman sibling of S500i. Here is a lowdown on this phone.

Looks : When I saw photos on the net I thought it would be bit bulky as its a slider, but in flesh (plastic)  its sleek and the slider seems to be solid. The black version was cool, but I personally feel the grey version is trendier. There is also a white version out there. The keypad is quite good.

Phone : The signal reception was bit jumpy , not sure whether its because of the service provider or the phone. But the audio quality was good. The speakerphone was tad soft as with all the Sony Ericssons I’ve encountered so far. The address book with multiple numbers, address, email address was excellent. The User Interface was a typical sony ericsson and the flash lite themes gave it a extra zing. Add to this the flashing lights along the sides of the device which can be customized for calls is a bonus.

Multimedia Walkman : The audio quality was loud and excellent. It seems it came with a 1 GB memory stick micro so you can drag and drop music and start grooving to your favourite music. The walkman application was good with album / artist / genre classification as well as album art support. The 240 x 320 resolution 2.0″ screen was much sharper than my K550i’s 176 x 220 1.9″ screen to watch videos, pictures. It also has FM which the S500i doesn’t have.

Extras : The 2.0 Mpx camera with no autofocus, flash is quite OK for snaps in well lighted conditions. The connectivity department is well looked after with GPRS, EDGE,Bluetooth V2.0, USB.Java Games and Applications will help you extend your phone functionality.

The phone was slightly sluggish when using Flash themes but otherwise the phone is a excellent choice for youngsters looking for a stylish multimedia oriented device. Retailing around 11,000/- Rs. (275$) it has competitors like Samsung D900i, Nokia N72 but its a good bet against its competitors.
