I’ve a TrendNet wireless router for the past 1 year, without being able to properly configure it with my BSNL Broadband connection. But the last week, with my friends Santhosh’s help I was finally able to make my home a ‘wi-fi’ hotspot. Here is how I did it,

First I checked my broadband connection was working. Then I took the network cable from the bsnl modem and plugged that end to 1 of the 4 LAN ports in the TrendNet router and whereas the other end was connected to the LAN port of my desktop computer. Then with the other network cable, one end was plugged into the WAN port of the router and the other end to the LAN port of the BSNL modem. Now I switched on both these gadgets and checked whether the “System”, “WAN”,”WLAN”,”LAN” lights were glowing in the router and “Power”,”Link / DSL”, “LAN” lights were glowing in the bsnl modem. At this point, if these lights glowed like it did for me the connections you have made are right. Now on to the next step.

trendnet

Booted into my PC, and in my Internet Explorer logged onto 192.168.1.1 with my router admin id and password. Then in the WAN link selected,I entered the following options

  • Connection Type: PPPOE
  • WAN IP: Obtain IP automatically
  • Service Name: ‘Anything (just for reference) or leave it blank’
  • UserName: Account username
  • Password: Account Password

And in the password section, I’ve selected WEP encryption and entered a 10 digit passcode. And in other options like SSID network its better to enter a simple network name. And basically thats all. After saving the router will restart and viola !! the broadband was working in my desktop and when I searched for a wireless network with my Ideapad it was there for me to surf wirelessly around my home.
