I was looking for a mobile phone for my brother who has a ageing Sony Ericsson T290i, since his needs are limited I fixed my budget at 3K and looked at these various contenders Nokia 2630, Samsung B520, M150 and Sony Ericsson K330. All three were almost same with some 1 or 2 minor differences. But since my brother has been a SE user for more than 4 years now I went with the K330. And here is a run down on its features,
- Measuring 100 x 45 x 12 mm and weighing 75 grams and made in a black plastic with gold trimming and blue lighted keypad it looks well made up and presented for a entry level phone
- The 1.7″ 128 x 160 TFT screen is quite small compared to its competitors but its bright and nice to look at, in indoors.
- As a phone, its network reception , call quality and battery life all seems very good. Ringtone volume is also nice and loud
- A comprehensive address book with multiple contact details, sms/ems/mms facility rounds it up as a good basic mobile phone
- The VGA camera is nothing to shout about but quite good for occasional snaps.
- Customization wise it has got 10 MB memory to fit mp3 ringtones, the usual Sony Ericsson themes (u can make ur own if u read my previous post), wallpapers etc.
- Connectivity wise there is only Bluetooth and that too only data transfer is supported with no option to sync address book which is a big miss for me and internet connectivity is via GPRS.
- Multimedia wise FM radio is present and the 10 MB memory can fit 2-3 mp3 songs if you want
- Java apps & games support is there and also basic organizer functions like notes, timer, calendar etc.
Whatever it said it can do the phone is doing it well and I am very satisfied with my choice

One of Sony Ericsson’s strong points was its customization feature mainly through its themes. Its theme creator software while freely available in the Developer section of their website it needed a grpahically inclined geeks to churn out some visually amazing theme. But the new version of Theme Creator V 4.0, has made theme creating a very easy task even for a computer dummy. Select the phone you have and the software provides with a wizard option for dummies and a more step-by-step hands on approach for pros. Just selecting a nice background and selecting colors matching with that made the theme come alive. Another nice option was the ready made effects available for various buttons giving it a 3D or embossed effect making the theme more PRO like.

Personalized ringtones and message tones can be set making it a more personalized theme. But the icons on the main menu can’t be changed. And also the Media players skin cannot be styled, pity since I’ve seen lots of themes on the net where the media player skin was styled to match the main theme. To make sure the world knows about your creation our name, url, email can be entered as author details when you decide to share it. Here is a Flower theme which I created.

In this season of Twenty 20 cricket and IPL, people who use computer to do their multimedia stuff will also be needing a all rounder which can handle almost all video and audio formats. I have already posted about K-Lite Codec long time back and here is a revised list of my favourite players,

- K-Lite Codec : Frequently updates, plays almost anything I throw at it without any problems. The Media Player classic player is just a barebones player but it does the job of playing video and audio.
- VLC Media Player : A very capable multimedia player of almost all formats and also has good streaming capabilities. I like its clean interface but some formats like real audio & real video didn’t play
- GOM Player : Many of my friends recommended this to me , It also has a nice & attractive interface with the capability to play many formats but still some formats like mp3 sometimes gave some missing codec. But the good thing is it will point to a location on the internet to download the missing codec
Basic information on all the three above are its FREE !!!!!!!
