I’ve already written a small piece on Yahoo Go !! . But for a last few weeks I haven’t been impressed by Yahoo Mail services so I was gradually shifting my mails to GMail. I’ve read and heard about Google’s Mobile products but personally I havent tried till the last 10 days.

gmail appThe first thing I tried was GMail’s java app, which is a no Non-Sense just like the actual web based GMail interface. It has all the basic functionalities which comes in the web based interface and more than that its best feature is that it allows to view our mails offline (how many mails or how far in the thread i haven’t yet found exactly) but it works offline. And attachments like doc, ppt, pdf , excel can also be viewed without the pictures and any fancy stuff ,which is inside it just plain old text.

One downer was that it didn’t allow me to download sound (mp3/wma) or movie files to be downloaded onto the phone.

But the main difference between Google Mobile & Yahoo Go ! is that google mobile is almost a full suite of wap applications for your phone browser. I tried out Orkut (i was able to see scraps & friend’s updates) and picasa (where I was able to see my photo gallery) whereas Yahoo Go is a full fledged java application (which i will cover in another post about Go 3.0)

portable speakersI was thinking of getting portable speakers for a while now, and it was a pleasant surprise when I was gifted one. The first thing that it hits you out is the “Lady Bug” like body with the speaker grill at the top which makes it quite a ornament on your desk.

The contents inside the blister packing were,

  • One Speaker
  • One 3.5 mm audio jack cable (with jack at both sides)
  • One usb charging cable

On first thoughts , I thought a single speaker won’t be that effective but its pretty good for ‘cheapo chinese product’. I was pleasantly surprised with the loudness and bass of the sound but I am not a audiophile to give you a expert opinion but its good for me :-)

It has a inbuilt Li-ion battery which came to 3-4 hours for me and needs a recharging time of 2 hours according to the instructions, but it can be used while charging since the charging and audio ports were different.

I’ve already discussed updating firmware for my old K55oi through the PC via Sony Ericsson Update Service and also via Firmware Over the Air (FOTA) via GPRS / EDGE / 3G [i.e according to your operator]. So when I checked my K660i via the software update option available in the “Settings Menu” in my phone I came to know for sure a firmware update was available and the estimated download size was 2.8 MB. But mulling over it quite a bit, I thought going through the SEUS route will give the phone a more complete update.

se update

I downloaded SEUS, installed it and followed its on screen instructions to start the update, but it warned that my entire data will be lost except of the memory card. So I made a backup and continued with the update process, the download size was almost 40 MB and after 30 minutes or so I was with a brand new firmware : R1FA035

The obvious thing from the update , apart from the now “New” phone (phonebook, sms, logs everything was wiped out), the boot up time of the phone was quicker and accessing phonebook was quicker too. For more on K660i firmware and its improvements keep track of MyK660
