In the long range of Cybershot phones from Sony Ericsson, the 3 megapixel camp has quite a few phones with almost same specs like the front runner K790,K800,K810 and atlast the slim K770i. Its main USP being is its slim and svelte looks. When I first saw my friend’s K770i it actually reminded me of my K550i in its exterior profile. The “Truffle brown” K770i was nice and different color and the build quality was excellent. The keys were normal and not the tiny ones found on K550i. The screen at 1.9″ with the resolution of 240 x 320 pixels was fine but quite small for this range of mobile phone.

The User Interface was typical Sony Ericsson with one flash theme to change the menu icons. The call quality was excellent. Routine stuff like SMS,MMS,EMS , Email are all present. The other real dampener other than the screen size was its media player version which is similar to that of my K550i which to say the truth is quite old but the audio quality and loudness was higher than K550i. The 3 megapixel camera was quite good but it has no xenon flash when compared to its other 3 megapixel brethren.

In the connectivity department 3G is present , but EDGE is asbent. Other than that Bluetooth, USB support is provided. Java Apps and Games can be installed to extend the functionality and fun in your phone. At 12,800/- bucks (310$), people looking for a solid phone+camera+music+fun can go ahead and get it.

Just after I bought my Ideapad Y410 , my friend asked me my views on a budget laptop but that doesnt make many compromises on the performance front. I suggested acer 4710/4720 or the Dell 1525. He somehow preferred Dell to Acer and after some discussions he customized and ordered it online. I’ve heard a lot of positive reviews on the new 1525 series and this week I got to see it in his home. His configuration is closer to mine with his Inspiron powered by a slightly better Core 2 Duo T5500 processor, 2 GB DDR2 RAM and loaded with Windows Vista Premium Edition.

One of the pleasant things about the 1525 is its slim profile and the blue matte finish ( there are various color options :-) ) . The 15″ widescreen was nice and pleasant to look at but it does make the laptop look much bigger compared to my 14.1″ Y410. But on the downside the build quality was not as robust as the lenovo Y410. And the keypad was quite spacious and nice to type. And his landing price at 35,000 Rs. (800$) was almost 200$ cheaper than my Y410 making it a nice Value for Money Buy.

I wasn’t able to check the audio quality but according to him it was OK. Even though it has no dedicated graphics card, the windows aero experience was smooth and nice, making me think whether I should upgrade my vista to the next level. And since he had stripped all the junk programs from start-up, the machine booted much faster compared to mine.

Its a while back that I wrote some of favorite freeware softwares , so here is some of my current freeware favorites for the year of 2008.

  • AVG Personal Edition : I’ve been using this antivirus for almost 3 years now. Its been steadily improving, the only problem which I found was its inability to find autorun based viruses in pen drives. But the 2008 edition with built-in spyware has a better User Interface and scanning engine. My only gripe about this version is that it needs to be daily updated, there is no option to change it as a weekly update and the e-mail scanner works for only 30 days. It also has got a paid Internet Security Suite. And for other free alternatives you can try Avast and Antivir
  • CCleaner : Another of my long time favorites. But after my ideapad and its tryst with vista CCleaner is not perfect in its working. Like it reports 8 MB to be cleaned and after cleaning it says 26 MB was cleaned. But still its a nice utility to weed out the junk from my Ideapad
  • JZip : After trying a host of compression utilities, JZip has been proved its a nice utility with the ability to view zip, rar, tar, iso archives. Its a lightweight and free software

Hopefully these softwares will be useful to you or if you have any other free alternatives let me know. And for the reminder of 2008 I am eagerly awaiting for the full release of Firefox 3 and Open Office 3
