Before I tell my first little experience with my K550i, I would like to tell in this world of Gadgets & Gizmos a term called “FIRMWARE” plays a very important part. Without these firmwares all you have is a paperweight instead of your mobilephone , mp3 player etc …..Lets say these are the brains of our gizmos….
Many of you might have come across glitches in your gadgets, so companies nowadays releases new firmwares to rectify those ‘bugs’ and improve your hardware’s performance.
I have tried updating my Creative ZEN V Plus without a hitch, a small downloadable file. Just plug in your player run the update file viola !!! in 2 minutes you are done. As far as I know in the mobile phone arena Sony Ericsson and Nokia are the ones who give control to the users to update the firmware for their phones. Sony Ericsson gives you two options ,
- SEUS – Sony Ericsson Update Service -> You will need a PC /Laptop with broaband connection
- FOTA – Firmware Over The Air -> You can update the phone’s firmware through either your GPRS / EDGE / 3G service provided by your telecom service provider
Even though I had gone through a host of SE mobiles I have never dared to update the firmware as I have read a lots of horror stories resulting in Dead Phones. Anyway everything new is a risk, so two days back downloaded the SEUS software plugged in my phone through USB cable and started the update. Even though I followed instructions there were few glitches to make the PC recognize my phone but finally did it and after a download of almost 30 MB and a update time of 10 minutes I got my K550 updated from R1JD001 to R6BC002 (firmware version no’s). Using FOTA, has one advantage that the doanload package will be small (in my case it was around only 3 MB but due to my crappy GPRS connection I didnt take this route)
Note : While updating firmware please read and follow the instructions properly so that you wont end up with a costly paperweight

whats the benefit of updating the firmware.,
some annoying thing about this phone is
1.large font, no option for changing font
2.camera is not as good as compared to k750
3.the loudspeaker is not as good as compared to k750
4.very little option. eg- there’s no option for viewing the total imcoming call duration. etc
5.most annoying while playing 3rd party app like java app i always have to accept to give permission to that app to read data from disk

Generally updating the firmware has made my phone more speedier and it is supposed to erase some minor glitches like in Bluetooth , camera performance and sound performance.
1. I like the rounded font of my K550i , sorry there is no option to change that
2. I think the overall performance is slightly better than K750…you can visit esato forums for comparison
3. k750 loudspeaker is much better but maybe a future firmware update might make it better
4. I dont think this option is available in any SE non-smartphone
5. To avoid this I think you need to install some certificates, how and from where I dont know

hey how r u? ina post in esato u said that ppl already converting k550 to w610?
will u explain how to do that?
also is there’s a easy option for updating the firmware.

I am fine…I have no proper knowledge on flashing phones to another version like k550 to w610 …i suppose you could visit sites like se-nse.com , topsony.com or search for K550 in youtube there is a video tutorial. Mind you that this will void your phone warranty.
If updating thru USB cable is a hassle and if you have a speedier GPRS / EDGE connection you can update through that
